Lent Reflection - week 1

Lent Jars  LENT begins on Ash Wednesday (17 February) and ends on Holy Thursday evening (Maundy Thursday, 1 April) before the evening Mass and Vigil.   Lent comprises a period of 44 days. The Lenten fast traditionally excludes Sundays and continues through Good Friday and Holy Saturday, totalling 40 days.

Lent jar 2021Holy week, which is the final week of Lent, and the week prior to Easter Sunday, begins on Palm Sunday (28 March) and ends on Holy Saturday (3 April).  This year we are asking everybody to fill a jar with their loose change throughout Lent.  Of course you can add notes too!  The jars will then be collected at St Mary’s church on Palm Sunday and all money raised will be given to charity.

We have chosen NHS Charities Together (www.nhscharitiestogether.co.uk) – a charity that supports more than 240 NHS charities across the UK.  Their Covid-19 Appeal was launched by NHS Charities Together in March 2020 to acknowledge and support NHS staff, volunteers and patients impacted by Covid-19 across the country. The campaign was put together in liaison with health bodies, NHS Charities Together member charities and national giving platforms.

The money raised is funding grants to help NHS charities support NHS staff, volunteers and patients in ways above and beyond what NHS funding can ordinarily provide, from meeting immediate and urgent needs to supporting the long term recovery from the impact of the crisis. They have raised over £140m so far.  Please find a jar and fill it with what you can to help support this wonderful charity.  Captain Tom raised over £32m for this charity – let’s do our bit in the Benefice of Frensham!

Palm Sunday service with procession in the churchyard at St Mary's on 28 March at 10.30am.  Please wrap up warm and bring face masks and chairs for your comfort.
